Wigan Pier was immortalised in prose by George Orwell in his anti-poverty work The Road to Wigan Pier. The building itself was used as a freighting point for the local mills and collieries, these days it houses a museum recounting the Pier's history. Plans are underway to develop the surrounding area into an arts and entertainment complex.
